We are avid hikers and have explored many different places in Tennessee and beyond but we are always thankful to be living in such a glorious state.
Small towns in Maine make up the backbone of the state. Sure we have places like Portland pulling in thousands of visitors every year, but in true Maine, life happens in the unassumed place. In those little towns scattered across the state which hold value and importance. We wanted to highlight 6 interesting little towns that the Pine Tree State just wouldn’t be the same without.
This little city in Maine is the capital of our state. Laws that shape the way we live all come out of this city and affect everything we do. It's also a lovely little city with many things to see and do. Explore the downtown area, enjoy the historic sites, or go for a walk at Viles Arboretum, all of these activities make up the charming little city of Augusta.
Many people have heard of Old Orchard Beach, but there is a little town right next to it that has an undeniable beach town charm. Having tons of coastline is what makes Maine so great. Few places marry a family neighborhood and a luxurious beach, but that's just what you will find at Ocean Park. A strong family connection with a beautiful Atlantic backdrop is the very thing that built Maine, up to what it is today.
Another coastal city that we couldn’t do without is Bar Harbor. This island city is the quintessential Maine vacation spot. Being filled with great seafood restaurants and unique shops makes downtown a great spot to stroll around any time of the day. With Acadia National Park being on the same island, Bar Harbor is a great gateway to the prettiest place in Maine. So we simply would not be the same without our famous Bar Harbor.
Freeport is such an important city to us Mainers, because of the flagship store for LL Bean. They have been a staple in the state clothing and equipping residents for all their outdoor adventures. LL Bean may be at the center of Freeport but this festive town is home to many celebrations throughout the year. From Christmas lights to bring in the holiday cheer to the summer concert series to make use of those warm summer nights. Freeport tends to be a gathering place for all Mainers to experience life together.
Camden is another harbor city that pairs mountains with the sea. The famous Mount Battie towers high over the port city and allows great views of the little harbor below. From seaside trails in the state park to a wonderful and historic downtown. Shop, eat, then relax by the water as you see the fishing boats coming and going. The fishing industry has sustained Maine for years, and without little harbors like this, our state wouldn't have that classic lazy lobster.
Phippsburg is home to a fantastic beach and an old military fort today, but long ago, it was actually one of the earliest settlements in North America. The settlement spent a couple of years thriving until lack of funds and hardship decimated it and they could no longer carry on. Without that hard work and the work of many other settlers and explorers, we would not have such great places to enjoy today. When it comes to small towns in Maine, Phippsburg is certainly one of the smallest but also has one of the biggest impacts. There is also a lesser-known military base left over that is a blast to explore.
The sum of all these small towns in Maine is what makes our state so great. We enjoy vast coastlines and rocky ridges as well as the value of a simple life with your family. These values and these places embody the true spirit of Maine.
