Parrots are delightful pets. They’re smart, inquisitive, and interactive, but they also live for 30-80 years, and their owners often become too old to care for them. When parrots in Maine need a new home, they often end up at Siesta Sanctuary. Take a look at this amazing place, and make plans to visit.
Siesta Sanctuary is a wonderful place for parrots to go when their owners can no longer care for them. It's home to 80 parrots, and in addition to caring for them, the sanctuary is open to the public for visits and education.

Margaret and Fritz Buschmann have always loved animals, and decided to start Siesta Sanctuary back in 2006. The sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves as a home to parrots, and educates the public about these incredible creatures.
80 brightly-colored birds call this sanctuary home, and they'll live their lives out here. These parrots aren't available for re-homing (though the Buschmanns will happily direct you to places where you can take home a parrot of your own). The parrots here live together as a flock, and they're as happy as can be.
The public is encouraged to visit this pretty place to meet the parrots and learn about them. They'll teach you all about caring for a pet parrot, and tell you about parrots in the wild. They'll also come to your school or organization for a presentation.
Volunteers are always welcome here, too. There's plenty to do, from socializing with the parrots, to making parrot toys, to preparing 80 parrot salads every day. Volunteers set their own schedules. Give the sanctuary a call at 207-683-6322 if you're interested in volunteering.
Siesta Sanctuary holds several open houses for the public every year, and visitors may also stop by for a visit on other days. If you're planning to drop in, just give them a call first to make sure they're available.
