Located off the coast of Jonesport is a lesser-known smattering of islands known as the Great Wass Archipelago.

Great Wass is about 1,700 acres, making it the largest of this group of over 43 different islands.
This is where the Gulf of Maine meets the Bay of Fundy, creating a unique biological world that allows many different unique plants, birds and fish to live.

But, even if wildlife isn't your thing you'll want to visit for the many hiking opportunities to be found here.

First, get there! You'll want to take U.S. 1 to Route 187 headed into Jonesport. At the Beals bridge, go through town to Great Wass Island. Once there, head right to take the road towards Black Duck Cove. Here you'll find the parking lot and all the trails!
For a 2 mile hike, take the Little Cape Point Trail through the woods, eventually leading to a bog at the shore of Cape Cove and Little Cape Point.

They'll take you through the forest, including to areas where there are views over the trees.

The 1.5 mile Mud Hole Trail will take you to the edge of Mud Hole, which includes beautiful views of the other area islands in Eastern Bay.

For a slightly longer option, take the Red Head Trail, which is the trail as that of Little Cape Point Trail, but then heads south along the rocky shore.

The coastal section of the shore is about 2.5 miles.

And, for a 5 mile version of these hikes, you can create a loop that combines the Little Cape Point and Mud Hole trails.
