You’ll want to head to Northeast Harbor to check out one of the most incredibly curated gardens in the state, The Asticou Azalea Garden. Created in 1956 by Northeast Harbor resident, Charles K. Savage, a visit will soothe your soul.

The garden is modeled after a traditional Japanese stroll garden which means you’ll find lots of paths leading through all areas of the gardens. Everything here is intentional, which isn’t a surprise when you consider that Savage was a diligent student of Japanese garden design.

One of the most striking features of the area is the zen garden that Savage included. It has rocks, sand, and is carefully raked to create the imagery of islands and moving water.

The Asticou Azalea Garden is open in 2020 from September 5th through October 31st on Saturdays and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visiting logistics are a bit different now so be sure to check the website for more information on how to explore.
