The First Congregational Church Is The Oldest In Maine, Dating Back To The 1700s
History has certainly made its mark here in Maine. From bridges to homes to stories passed along for generations, there are so many interesting things to imagine when you want to think about what Maine was like before we all arrived here. This church is one of the oldest structures in the state and it comes with an interesting back story.
Kittery is one of Maine's most popular tourist towns. Located in the southern part of the state, it's easy to access from other parts of New England and there's plenty to do if you love shopping and beaching. But, it also has some of the most fascinating history in Vacationland.
The church is the oldest in the state, though elements have been added to account for an expanding congregation that swelled as more people moved to the Kittery area.
Those with an interest in architecture might notice that there are a few different design elements integrated into the building. The Greek Revival paneled pilasters at the building corners are especially notable.
While it's best not to consider it a tourist attraction, the congregation is happy to welcome visitors who would like to attend services.
The First Congregational Church is open and welcoming of visitors every Sunday morning at 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. You can learn more about them and read through their calendar events online here. Or, follow them on Facebook for updates and announcements. Address: 23 Pepperrell Road, Kittery Point, ME 03905.
Michelle has lived in many places, but counts Maine as one of the best. In addition to the smell of ocean water in the air on rainy days in Portland, she loves puppies, photography, funny people, the Maine Red Claws, traveling, fresh tomatoes, Cambodia and filling out forms.
