People say it’s not the size that matters, and we couldn’t agree more. That notion rings true for all things, including the Maine towns on this list. While they might not sound familiar to those who live anywhere outside the state, some surprisingly big things have happened in each one. Check them out and let us know if we missed anything.
This story is truly eerie. In the 1880s, Louis H.F. Wagner murdered a number of women on Smuttynose Island. One night, Wagner went to Smuttynose Island and attempted to rob and kill the women, who fought back. One escaped by hiding barefoot in the snow until daybreak when he made her way to local police to report the crime. He was later caught, stupidly enough, at one of his local hangouts.
Known today as the home of Bowdoin College, it also happens to be where abolitionist, writer Harriet Beecher Stowe, wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. While she and her family only lived here for two years, the author referred to her time here as the "happiest and healthiest" of her life.

This town has a bit of a somber history. It's the site of one of the most well-known homicides in the state. In 2010 the body of a man wearing a hat was found in the woods of Stacyville. He was found with a briefcase containing water, bug spray and a sweater but was otherwise not dressed to be walking in the woods. The crime has still never been solved.

In 2010 Thayne Ormsby is reported to have been chasing after a local drug dealer whom he didn't like. When he found him at his home, he stabbed the dealer, the dealer's son and a friend before setting the house on fire in an attempt to cover up the crime.
In the area that is now Phippsburg, the very first ship built by English colonists was constructed. Named The Pinnace Virginia, it was built along the Kennebec River and was used to return some of the last colonists to England in 1608.
Specifically, Cadillac Mountain. For some of the year, Cadillac is actually the first place to see the country's sunrise. So, really, this huge thing happens EVERY day. At least until early March. After that you'll need to head to Mars Hill, followed by Quoddy Head in mid-September.
