15 Things That Nobody Ever Mentions When They Talk About Maine

When people talk about Maine, it tends to be a lot of the things you’d expect. Lots of lobster, some love for lighthouses and, of course, recommendations for things to do on our beautiful coast. All of these things are magnificent, but we all know there’s more to it. While Mainers are proud of what we’re known for, there are some things conspicuously absent from conversation. Some of these are missing because they simply don’t exist in Maine, others get overshadowed by more “Maine” things. Either way, here is a list of things you may have noticed are missing from conversations about Vacationland.
Mention of waiting in line is often missing from conversations because it's often missing from Maine life. In some places, if every person in town were waiting in a line it would still just look like a few people enjoying the fresh air together.
We like to keep it quiet. Just kidding, just kidding. The true Mainers among us will likely disagree with this. You either love it or hate it and we think it's best to keep our mouths shut on the subject.

While Maine is making a name for itself in the craft beer world, wine is still relatively untouched. The climate might not be ideal, but Maine does have one winery. Okay, that's not true. Everything in Maine is perfect! But, the reality is that our craggy coast isn't all white sand beaches. Like all of us, our beaches can be a little rough around the edges.
It's hard to believe, but there's ANOTHER shoe game in town. Eastland is based on Freeport and has been around since 1955. The company makes quality leather footwear "the way we live life up in Maine: with honesty, integrity, sincere enthusiasm, and authentic down-to-earth style." We love L.L. Bean, but it's always nice to remember that lots of great things come out of Maine. Don't forget about Rancourt & Co (based on Lewiston,) Quoddy (based in Perry) and G.H. Bass, (based in Wilton) either!
It could be that people from away just don't understand it. You'll hear about the coast and you'll hear about how nice the people are, but if you're not familiar with Maine you might not be expecting that true Maine accent. Ayuh!
This one seems to be forgotten! While people talk about the ocean, you don't often hear about the smell in particular. If you've ever woken up near the sea in Maine you'll know that special, salty smell I'm referring to.

People who don't love Maine like to talk about the cold. While we can't deny that it exists, we all know that living here means waiting for those 2.5 to 3 months of undeniable beauty.
The people who complain about the cold Maine winters obviously don't know how much fun they can be! Sledding, skiing, ATVing - there's plenty to do to stay warm in the winter!
Lobster might be our big export, but we've got tons of delicious things that don't require bibs and cracking shells.
That's because we rarely have them. Guess what? All of the people that own these cars are going to work tomorrow!
This is another oversight! When it comes to surfing, it's the west coast that many people think of. But, have you ever been on the Maine coast just after a Nor'easter? While we don't recommend doing anything dangerous, Maine is actually a great place for adventures in the waves.

Low tide in Maine is no joke and it'll really ruin your day if you forget about it.
You've probably read about lots of great places to visit here, but one thing we'll never talk about is our favorite secluded spots. From watching the sunset to being alone in the woods, we like to keep our hometown spots a bit of a secret.
