11 Places In Maine That Are Better Than Anywhere Else In The Country
Mainers have long known that they live in the best state in America. Given that status, it’s no wonder that we’ve got so many incredible places to go, things to see, and experiences to enjoy. We’re not trying to say that versions of these things can’t be found anywhere else. But we ARE saying that the Maine versions just can’t be beat! Read on for what we think are the places in Maine that are better than anywhere else you’ll find in America!
1. Angel Falls, Franklin County
Angel Falls is one of the most beautiful, but underrated places in Maine. The falls are about 90 feet and are considered to be the tallest in Maine. This is a good trip to make if you're in the Rangeley area as the trailhead is about 18 miles south of Oquossoc. The hike is only about a mile, but it's fairly steep in some areas.
2. The Freeport McDonald's
Stroll through Freeport looking for deals and you'll find tons. Stroll through Freeport looking for fast food and you might have a hard time. That's not because it doesn't exist, but instead because it's hidden. There's just one McDonald's and it's not your run of the mill burger joint. This one is sitting inside a house that's more than 150 years old! Check it out in
3. Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge, Caribou
There are lots of remote areas throughout America, but The County in Maine feels like the most remote. Regardless, it's certainly worthy of being called the most beautiful! There are lots of activities to do here, including hiking, running, snowshoeing, and skiing.
4. The town of Blue Hill
A small Maine town that's big of scenery is what we say about Blue Hill! Located in Hancock County, about 14 miles southwest of Ellsworth and near Acadia National Park, Blue Hill has some wonderful hiking options and some even better dining options!
5. Acadia National Park, Mt. Desert
Maine's largest and only National Park can keep you busy for days. Whether you choose to get lost in the forest by spending your time hiking and camping, or if you stay in Bar Harbor and make day trips, Acadia is one of the most beloved and well-known trips to take while in Maine.
6. The Bold Coast Scenic Byway
America has a lot of byways and they're all pretty nice. But, this one in Maine is surely the best one out there. At 125 miles, it's long enough to make a weekend of it and short enough to tackle it in one go. Plus, those views! The trip takes you through some of Maine's most beautiful small coastal towns. We wrote an article about this perfect drive, which you can find by
7. Duckfat, Portland
Portland has become a true culinary hub for the state of Maine for good reason. One of the best reasons? Duckfat! This place is home to some of the best fries in Maine, which we wrote all about
8. The Asticou Azalea Garden, Northeast Harbor
If you're looking for a place to escape, there's no doubt you'll find it in this garden. The out-of-the-way location means it's peaceful and not overrun with visitors, plus it's full of pristine manicured flowers and plants. Read more about it
9. The International Cryptozoology Museum, Portland
Maine's got its fair share of weird! The world's only museum exploring the study of hidden or unknown animals such as Yetis, Bigfoot, Lake Monsters, and Sea Serpents, as well as hundreds of other yet-to-be-found animals (cryptids) is located right here. Makes sense considering all the Sasquatch sightings reported here. Last winter, the museum hosted the Minnesota Iceman — as an exhibit, not a guest. Visit them at: 4 Thompsons Point #106, Portland / 207-832-7398
10. Gulf Hagas and the Rim Trail, Katahdin Iron Works State Park.
Visit Katahdin Iron Works State Park to explore Gulf Hagas, a beautiful three-mile area that features sheer canyon walls, lush forest, and waterfalls. The Gulf Hagas Rim Trail is 8.6 miles.
11. This Epic Zipline!
While it might not be the season for it at the moment, we've just passed the longest day of the year and before you know it we'll be faced with warmer weather! Monkey C Monkey Do in Wiscasset is one of the most fun activities in Maine. Soar above the ground while ziplining through the air and then come back down to explore the ropes course! Visit them at: 698 Bath Road, Wiscassett / (207)882-6861
Since we’re loving Maine a little extra today, here’s a way to appreciate it even more.
