The Fourth of July weekend is finally here, and we thought it might be a nice time to remember how patriotic our great state is. From important moments in America’s history to happy people appreciating the land around them, here are just a few reasons why Maine is one of the most patriotic states in the country!

1. We can protect ourselves and the states around us.

The depth of our many harbors would allow us to provide anchorage for all the Navy fleets in the world. That's a lot of protection.
2. Many veterans call Maine their home.

Mainers believe in their country and many have stood up to serve it in times of crisis. About 1 in 10 Maine locals have served in one of America's armed forces.
3. And we also give back to our state.

4. We are one of only 3 states that celebrate Patriot's Day.

The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War on April 19, 1775. Fun fact: The other states that recognize the civic holiday are Massachusetts and Wisconsin, where it is called "Patriots' Day."
5. Mainers love to vote!

Our voter turnout is truly impressive. During the 2012 election, 61% of voting aged Mainers showed up at the polls. That's a whopping 10% higher than the national average. That placed us second in the nation in terms of voter turnout. In 1991 and 1996, we were ranked #1.

Toothpicks are key to popping those apps at your holiday picnic. Until 2003, when the factory was closed, Strong, Maine was the toothpick capital of the world. In 1887, Charles Forster was the first to come up with the idea of disposable toothpicks made of wood. He chose Strong as his hub due to the high amount of Birch in the area.
