Hugging the banks of the Ouachita River, Monroe is a beautiful city in Northern Louisiana with a lot to love. From the serenity of the Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge to the fascinating Coca-Cola exhibit at the Biedenharn Museum, Louisiana’s 8th largest city offers a wide range of attractions to feed those with a hunger for adventure. Speaking of hunger, there’s one restaurant in Monroe that might just be the best steakhouse in Louisiana, and it’s the perfect way to end a day exploring this charming city. Let’s check it out:
A trip to Monroe isn’t complete without dining at Doe’s Eat Place.
The family-owned eatery has quite a fascinating backstory. Doe’s was opened in 1941 by Dominick "Doe" Signa and his wife, Mamie. In its earliest days, it was a hole-in-the-wall that served strictly Black customers. A local doctor began coming in and Doe would cook him a steak, and before long, Doe’s Eat Place became quite the popular pit stop for a meal. Eventually, Doe’s became a full-time restaurant.
It’s easy to feel the history of the building when you walk in.
Seafood dishes, chicken, and spaghetti & meatballs are just a few of the other sensational dishes you'll be tempted to try. Oh, and don't forget about their homemade hot tamales! They still use the original family recipe from the '40s.
That said, the steaks are truly the main event here.
