The Lighthouse Road Trip On The Louisiana Coast That's Dreamily Beautiful

This historic lighthouse is found right at the border of Louisiana and Texas, Latitude: 29.71657 Longitude: -93.85018. It has been kept standing over the years through numerous hurricanes and civil war battles. It was built in 1849 for $7,500 right after the Republic of Texas joined the United States. Today, Cheniere Energy built a four-mile road to access the lighthouse, making it easy for those seeking to keep it restored.

This lighthouse was built in 1856 at the end of the Atachafalaya Bay, helping boats navigate the main channel of the river. While water continued to rise and land disappeared around the lighthouse, the town of Berwick, LA, decided to move it up river in 1987 to preserve it, where it is found today. It's listed on the National Register of Historic places and can be found at 3298 Bellview Front St. Berwick.

This unique lighthouse is found within the city limits of New Orleans, at the intersection of Elysian Fields Ave. and Lakeshore Drive. The beautiful structure once anchored the community of Milneburg before it was incorporated into New Orleans, connecting the railroad from this town on the lake to the French Quarter in the early 19th-century. It was marketed as a resort town, and the lighthouse was an attraction. Later, it was part of the scenery at the historic Pontchartrain Park, and today is accessible to visitors on Lakeshore Drive.

This lighthouse was first established in 1838 at the north end of the Canal that ran from Uptown to Lake Pontchartrain. The structure was heavily damaged during hurricane Katrina but was lovingly restored and is now run by the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation as the New Canal Lighthouse Museum and Education Center. (It's an awesome place to explore with friends or kids at 8001 Lakeshore Drive.)

While you can no longer see this historic building, as it was lost during Katrina, the rigolets lighthouse was very beloved and nestled in this historic building for many decades.
