Louisiana has 21 state parks, and each one is a nature lover’s paradise. Next time you’re looking for a new adventure to take on, consider heading over to the northeast corner of the state, where you’ll find Poverty Point State Park, one of the most underrated state parks in Louisiana. Let’s check it out.
Poverty Point Reservoir State Park is a hidden gem that’s just waiting for you to explore.
Located in Richland Parish just outside of Monroe is the perfect little slice of paradise for anyone looking to get away from it all for a day or two and enjoy the lovely scenery.
Nestled along the massive 2,700-acre reservoir, visitors to this beloved park can enjoy a variety of water sports during the warmer months, as well as year-round fishing.
Largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish are just a few of the prized fish lurking just beneath the surface.
For those wishing to explore the park on foot, the 0.5-mile nature trail is just what you’re looking for.
Winding along an off-shoot of Bayou Macon, this scenic trail is great for spotting wildlife, including the elusive Louisiana black bear.
Kids of all ages will love the playgrounds and ample green space to sprawl out on.
You might end up loving it so much that you’d like to extend your stay.
There are several RV hook-ups and primitive campsites for the true outdoorsman, but if you’d prefer a more modern camping approach, they also offer several cabins that will be your home away from home.
The waterfront cabins offer picture-perfect views of the reservoir and come with everything you need to make your stay as comfortable as possible. You can even fish right from your back porch!
Poverty Point Reservoir State Park is open daily from 6 a.m. - 9 p.m. and stays open until 10 p.m. on the weekends.
