Everyone knows Louisiana is unique. But what are some things that you can ONLY find in our state? Here are 10 things that you’ll only discover in Louisiana.
During these uncertain times, please keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your bucket list to visit at a later date.
1) Cajunfied Everything
From the Cajun Night Before Christmas to adding –eaux to everything, Cajun Louisiana loves to make everything their own.
2) The Original Popeyes
Originally called “Chicken on the Run”, Al Copeland opened the first Popeyes on June 12, 1972 in Arabi, LA.
3) The day off before Ash Wendesday
While the rest of the country is working, Louisiana residents are celebrating our favorite holiday—Mardi Gras.
4) The longest running prison rodeo
The Angola Prison Rodeo began in 1965 and raises over $400,000 a year to supplement programs at the prison.
5) A grave that looks like a church
Cemeteries across the state created these tombs to keep those that had passed away from floating away during floods.
6) The oldest trees in America outside of the Redwoods of California
While cypress trees have been victim to logging, we still have a number of old growth trees that are well over 1000 years old.
7) A proper Po-Boy
Maybe you can find a po-boy outside of the state—but I wouldn’t recommend eating it.
8) Drive-Thru Daquiri shops
Thought of as an urban legend by some tourists, anyone who comes to Louisiana will find out quickly that what they’ve heard is true!
9) The oldest structure in the country being used as a bar
Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop was built between 1722 and 1732 and is still a popular tourist destination on Bourbon Street.
