These gardens were created by a member of the McIlhenny family, Edward Avery McIlhenny.

He was known for his love of birds and exotic plants, and for the breathtaking Chinese gardens, which features a Chinese Buddha sculpture from 1100 AD. It is found in the small temple pictured here.
Edward also created a bird sanctuary here, called Bird City. It provides a place for snowy egrets and other migratory birds to stop during their flights.
