At the very end of Canal Street lies a Neo-classical revival-style mansion that’s almost 150 years old, known as the Mortuary. The 14,000-square foot, the 3-story mansion has served as many things over the past century, including an actual mortuary. The mansion was built in 1872 and served as the home for Mary Slattery and her family until around 1930 when PJ McMahon purchased the residence and turned it into a grand funeral home, and it operated as such for roughly 80 years. Today, it’s one of the most haunted houses in Louisiana, attracting people from all over. This year promises to be one of the scariest yet, are you brave enough to make it through?
There are haunted houses, and then there’s The Mortuary.
Only in New Orleans would you find a haunted house that’s an actual haunted house with a history that dates back to the 1870s. During the day, it looks like any ordinary Creole mansion in the area. But at night…
At night, it transforms into one of the most haunted houses in the country.
These deceased group of mass murderers and serial killers committed crimes that were so violent that their souls weren’t allowed to pass to the Ethereal Plane so they are banished to The Mortuary where they are doomed to live out their crimes for eternity.
Before entering, you’ll be given an Ivory Mask of Ether.
They’re pulling out all the stops this year, and the mask is just one more piece to the puzzle to make you feel like you’re a part of their haunted universe. You’ll go through the haunted house wearing the mask, and be instructed to remove it during different areas of the attraction.
You might just come face to face with an actual ghost.
That’s right, a haunted house that’s actually haunted. Countless paranormal investigators have come through these doors over the years, all confirming that the 14,000-square foot mansion has quite a few spirits still lingering about.
The Mortuary will be open every weekend starting on September 27, 2019 and running straight through until the first week of November.
