This historic site was established in 1867, during an intense yellow fever epidemic in New Orleans.
St. Roch was born in 1348, where he became well known for surviving the plague.

He reportedly told those around him that his dog had licked his wounds and healed him. From then on, he became the patron saint of lost causes, people with disabilities and diseases, and dogs.
After Reverend Thevis began praying to St. Roch, miraculously no one in his parish died during the epidemic.
