You’ve heard about it, maybe even passed by it, but have you ever eaten here? There’s always a line to get one of their famous sandwiches, and if you’ve visited this old-fashioned Italian-American grocery store, then you’re in for a real treat.

Founded in 1906 by Salvatore Lupo, Central Grocery is on their third generation of serving delicious sandwiches and selling Italian delicacies.

The shelves are filled with only the best Italian products available. Olive oils, olive salads, pastas, marinara, and more. They also carry several local products, from spices to pralines.

Salvatore Lupo is credited with inventing this colossal sandwich, although Italians had been making variations of this sandwich for years. Central Grocery still prepares their muffs like they always have: with meats sliced in house, with their family’s olive salad, and with handmade bread baked locally.

You can find Central Grocery at 923 Decatur Street.
