Nestled snugly in the heart of the French Quarter on historic Royal Street, the Hotel Monteleone has been a New Orleans landmark since it opened in 1886.
It's one of the few long-standing, family-owned and operated hotels left in the country. Antonio Monteleone arrived in New Orleans from Sicily around the year 1880. He was a cobbler by trade and set up a humble shop on Royal Street and got to work. Business was good and in 1886, he had the opportunity to purchase a small hotel also on Royal Street. Over the years, there have been many additions and expansions, but one thing remains the same: the family that runs it.
Criollo is Spanish for 'Creole,' and that's the type of cuisine you'll find on the menu, especially on the brunch menu. Treat yourself to New Orleans classics like shrimp and grits, gumbo, or even Eggs Sardou (which was invented at the nearby fine dining establishment, Antoine’s).
Boasting 570 rooms (including 50 suites), you'll feel like royalty from the moment you step inside.
The hotel is pet friendly, too! They even have a special pet package to make your fur baby also feel like royalty and a helpful brochure with a guide to all the pet-friendly attractions around the city.
Perhaps the most incredible attraction at the Hotel Monteleone is the famous Carousel Bar.
It's the only carousel in the city that you have to be 21 to ride! It was installed in 1949, has 25 seats, and yes, it does actually spin. Don't worry, it doesn't rotate fast! It takes about 15 minutes to make one full rotation. Since it does only have 25 seats, it fills up quickly. There are other tables and chairs around the lounge, but if you want the experience of riding the carousel, you'll want to arrive outside of peak times. You don't have to be a hotel guest to enter, and it's open daily from 11 a.m. until midnight.
