One of the best parts about living in Louisiana is that there is just so much to see and do (and eat). From beautiful bayous to antebellum plantations, there truly is something for everyone in this great state of ours. You may not have heard of this particular attraction, but that’s about to change. It’s 100% worth the road trip to visit this World Heritage Site that’s right in our own backyard.

Poverty Point is a World Heritage Site located in Pioneer, Louisiana.

This site is comprised of several mounds and earthworks that date back over 3,000 years.

There are many mysteries that surround Poverty Point.

No one knows why Poverty Point was built in the first place, and no one knows how this painstaking work was truly done. Since the original inhabitants left no written word of their day-to-day lives, we can only speculate.

Another interesting mystery is that Poverty Point was abandoned around 1100 B.C. and a new group moved in around 700 A.D., but only for a short time. Neither left a written account of their lives here.
Luckily, archaeologists are constantly unearthing new clues, giving us valuable insight into how this community lived.
