Most People Don’t Know This Happened In Louisiana In 1957
During the early morning hours of June 27, 1957, Hurricane Audrey struck the shores of Southwestern Louisiana and Southeastern Texas, causing enormous damage and a huge loss of life. As more recent hurricanes have tended to detract attention from this atrocious storm, we wanted to take the time remember all the live lost for everyone in Louisiana.

When it hit, it was a category 4.

Audrey was the strongest June hurricane to make landfall in the United States.

Prior to landfall, Audrey disrupted offshore drilling in the Gulf to the tune of $16 million dollars.

The majority of the 416 people who passed away in the storm were from Cameron Parish.

Many Cameron parish residents were left unaware, as the warnings predicted a later landfall than what occured.

The number of deaths is not certain, but some estimate at least 500.

National organizations, such as the Red Cross pictured here, helped the region heal over time.
Were you around during the time of Audrey? We would love it if you could share any memories you have of this storm and its aftermath! And please do pass this along so that the next generation of Louisiana residents will remember this storm. Thanks for sharing 🙂
