I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky.
I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.
Kentucky is vastly known for its small town charm, but it also has cities that cater to those who appreciate the convenience of big cities. The bonus is, most of ours still have a nice mix of southern charm combined with those wonderful amenities. Now you won’t find things like multicultural restaurants, boutiques, unique businesses catering to oddities in every town, but they do exist.
Here are 10 bigger cities in the Bluegrass with all the big city amenities:
This community was once a booming crossroads between Burlington and Union at the "current" US 25. The city now has a population of right around 29,951, and with still being somewhat of a crossroad, it makes the town full of amenities.
Bowling Green is doing pretty well with 58,067 residents. It has a large variety of restaurants, storefronts, and one of the most amazing liquor warehouses you will find in the state. You can literally make a six pack of different types of beer.
A few readers have mentioned the pleasant atmosphere of this peaceful larger town. With a population of 40,640, this area has managed to preserve the beauty and the southern charm quite well. Citizens find all their needs well taken care of, with many families living in the community for generations.
With a current population around 28531, this ready for comfort community was named to honor the wife of General John Hardin. This quiet, yet thriving community has even been the focus of a feature film, under the same name.
The current population of this agricultural community is 29,098. Though formerly primarily a farming town, as the area grew, so did the businesses. Georgetown has been the host of large factories, large farms, and everything in between.
Though the population is only 25,527, this is our state capital, meaning it has something to offer for everyone. This is where politicians sometimes commune, and you know they will not be without their conveniences. Thus, the same comforts are consistent in the town, along with a generally friendly feel.
This town is noted as a wonderful place to call home with a nice mix of country and city living. The actual city population is around 57,625, but the entire metropolitan area has over 116,000 people. This just adds to the conveniences available to residents, as the city caters to the public diversity. Finding farm raised food is not a problem in Owensboro. It was also a resting spot of the famed Lewis and Clark expedition.
This large country community has just about anything one could need to survive comfortably. The population is only 31,577, but that's not too small to make sure visitors and residents alike find all needs attended too. The community was named after a local veteran and state representative, Samuel Hopkins.
This urban Fayette community has around 295,803 people with an abundance of local boutiques, restaurants, and businesses. Being home to the Kentucky Wildcats means this town has to have amenities students from near and far will appreciate.
With a population of 597,337 it's relatively easy to find anything you might be looking for. This is Kentucky’s largest city and home to the University of Louisville Cardinals. It has one of the most diverse communities in the state, as being a college town, it has become a mixing pot for different cultures. Overall, that makes it a wonderful source of unique items, foods, and businesses.
The Bluegrass State offers a variety of unique towns and cities to visit, but the places above will not lack for entertainment. Each will provide a good mix of down home flavor with modern technology. If you’re not a fan of small towns, than you’ll truly appreciate each one of these cities and what they have to offer.
