In terms of hidden gems, Gabe’s Branch Falls is a bit off the beaten path but this refreshing hike leads straight to a beautiful waterfall that’s perfect for swimming on a hot day in Kentucky. To access this waterfall swimming hole in Kentucky, you need to be up for a little off-the-beaten-path adventure... literally! The trailhead to the falls is located off a mountain road that alternates from paved to dirt and nothing about it is clearly marked. Part of the trail follows along the creek and the entire area is worth exploring. While it's obvious where the trail has been blazed in the past, keep in mind this is not an official path, but one made over years and years of use. You'll know you're close to Gabe's Branch when you hear the sonorous sound of the rushing water. The path does lead down to the base of the falls, where you can get a closer look at the turquoise water -- and, if you're feeling adventurous, go for a delightfully refreshing swim!

Swimming holes are a summer rite of passage in the Bluegrass, and our state is home to many a refreshing natural pool. Blue Heron is a perennial favorite; the swimming hole is located under the footbridge in the picnic and camping area off Mine 18 Road leading towards South Fork. This is a part of the Daniel Boone National Forest near Stearns. The swimming hole is a pretty deep, surprisingly clear pool that was created via Big South Fork. Grassy Creek is another popular oasis; this little slice of heaven is just off Route 80 inside Breaks Interstate Park. At the parking and picnic area, look for the Center Creek Trail, which is visible and easy to find. Center Creek flows into Grassy Creek, and it's a beautiful little nature scene in Kentucky!
