There are all sorts of historic accommodations and cabins in Kentucky to rest your head to the night, but not many predate the state’s founding. In the heart of Kentucky Horse Country, this pioneer-themed VRBO isn’t merely outfitted with historic decor — the log cabin quite literally hails from the 1700s and retains many of its original features and charm.
While our country’s 13 original colonies are touted for their age and historic relevance, Kentucky entered the union in 1792 — just two states shy of being one of the original 13. As such, the Commonwealth is home to numerous historic sites and homes, including a log cabin that's been renovated as a rental.
The land on which the cabin was built was patented in 1784 to James Garrard Sr., Kentucky’s second governor. Exactly when the cabin was built is unknown, but it was common for settlers back then to build a "pen" to stake their claim. As such, the owners estimate that at least one room of the cabin can be traced back to the 1780s or 1790s.
This historic log cabin has only been owned by one family, lovingly passed down from generation to generation. Today its owner, Laura, has renovated the historic property into a delightfully pioneer-themed VRBO in Kentucky.
Of course, when we say "themed," the truth is that everything in this charming log cabin is authentic and historic, with Laura taking great care to respect the age and integrity of the home.
Inside you'll find two cabin bedrooms -- one a master and one a “bunk” room with both a double and twin bed. The cabin family room has central heat and air conditioning, a wood burning stove, and a new, queen-sized pull-out couch to for extra sleeping arrangements.
The kitchen is well-equipped, and a limited array of local and organic food is available for additional charge on the honor system. You'll dine at the cabin's quaint Tomlinson Table, the design invented and patented by Laura’s great grandfather!
The property also has two full baths, a laundry and mud room, and a three-season porch overlooking goat hollow. It is a delightful step back in time that's beautiful in its simplicity.
Speaking of beauty, this historic log cabin is located at Mt. Folly, one of the largest working organic farms in Kentucky. It sits on more than 1,000 acres of breathtaking Bluegrass hills and pastures in the heart of Kentucky Horse Country.
While this log cabin is just a stone's throw from Red River Gorge, Natural Bridge, the Kentucky Horse Park, and Winchester, you might just decide to put up your feet and enjoy the peace and quiet. Because really, can you imagine a more wonderful getaway?
