Every once in awhile you stumble across a place that immediately finds its way into your heart. Kentucky is filled with such places, but in Livingston, nestled on 50 acres of rolling Kentucky hills, you’ll find Rockcastle River Company. It’s difficult to describe this destination with just one word; it’s a garden, a home, a shop, a hiking trail – basically, it’s a magical place that you’ll want to experience as soon as possible.
An hour south of Lexington, close to I-75, is the Carloftis family homestead, known as Rockcastle River Trading Company. The family has turned their property into an oasis for locals and travelers alike and a place where you can stop in and experience true southern charm and hospitality.
The heart of the property is Lucille Carloftis, mother of Jon Carloftis, renowned Garden Designer. When you ask visitors about their experience at Rockcastle, their first response is always about Lucille. You will find her in the store, eager to welcome you in and share a story or two about their lovely home and the history of the property and its features.
The gift shop is one of many attractions offered, but the name "gift shop" doesn't do it justice. Jon Carloftis hand picks each item that they proudly display for sale, and they specialize in locally made and handcrafted gifts, items for the home, and many others.
After a visit to the shop, you'll want to wander the property, which the family graciously encourages. Near the main building, you'll find a picturesque pond, vegetable and herb garden and the beginning of the Botanical Trail that winds throughout the grounds. You won't believe the magical appeal of the lush gardens, meandering river and natural serenity that this place provides.
There are other buildings on the property, including this potting shed, as well as the family's home and a well-preserved one room schoolhouse. You'll feel as if you've stepped back in time, and you'll likely not want to find your way back.
Rockcastle River Trading Company is impeccably maintained and lovingly designed to welcome visitors in to experience pure magic and southern charm. The property is open April through December, Monday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm. They hold special events from time to time and mostly just want to share their love for this Kentucky land and the beauty it presents.
