You’ll Love This One Awesome Activity In Louisville And It Won’t Cost You A Cent
They say the best things in life are free, and that’s absolutely true at 21c Museum, an incredible contemporary art museum found in Downtown Louisville! Spend the day deciphering interesting art in the form of statues, film, canvas pieces, and anything else imaginable! You’ll have a blast with the interactive exhibits and learn to appreciate art in a whole new way. This one-of-a-kind spot tops the list of best free activities in Louisville.
Keep an eye out for the red penguins...
These odd fellows hang out atop the 21c Hotel, which sits above the museum.
You'll know you're in the right spot when you see the glittering gem-covered limousine out front.
The giant golden statue of David will lead you right inside. It's pretty hard to miss.
Conceptual artist Serkan Özkaya made this double-size, golden replica of Michelangelo’s David for the 9th International Istanbul Biennial in 2005. Özkaya made the statue from fiberglass and gold, following the dimensions using a virtual 3D model. Now it is one of the most memorable pieces of art on display in Louisville!
Step inside and you'll see an amazing permanent installation called "Text Rain."
Camille Utterback is the artist behind this incredible interactive piece, which uses a projection to show a video of yourself as letters fall on your image. The installation lets you manipulate the letters, which are not random, but a poem about bodies and language. Extend your arms out to catch a full phrase of the poem at once!
Other exhibits rotate frequently, so there's always something new to see.
21c Museum has two levels of contemporary art, with some installations that are permanent and many others that rotate in and out. It's common to see awesome sculptures and canvas art made with unique materials. There is typically a room or two dedicated to experimental film, which is definitely something you don't see everyday. There's always something new, exciting, and unusual to wrap your head around here.
You can walk through a glow-in-the-dark hallway.
Enjoy the almost-spooky blacklight jungle along this wall.
Peer out of the window to these one-of-a-kind vats of vapor.
This piece, titled "Cloud Rings" and created by Ned Kahn, was inspired by the science behind nature. These machines produce puffs of cloud-like fog every minute or so and can be seen both from the streets of Louisville and through a window inside the museum.
Even the bathrooms are interesting here...
Prepare yourself for an unusual eye and a two-way mirror before entering these restrooms. It can be pretty alarming when you first notice it!
The elevator is just as amazing.
The lights in this elevator create an illusion of being infinite. The attention to detail in this building is incredible!
Once you've devoured the amazing art, grab a bite at Proof on Main.
Proof on Main is a restaurant and bar found inside of the 21c Museum and Hotel and also has interesting art on display in the dining. If you're looking for a place to grab lunch with friends, this restaurant is a fun choice and won't disappoint.
21c Museum and Hotel is located at 700 W Main St, Louisville, KY 40202.
