9 Weird Side Effects Everyone Experiences From Growing Up In Kentucky
No matter where you are from, where you grew up and your childhood memories stick with you—for better or worse. If you grew up in Kentucky, you’re likely experiencing a few weird side effects from your time as a child in the Bluegrass State. While all of the memories may not be great, we’ll bet these side effects are not only true, but evoke the love for Kentucky you’ve had since you grew up.
1. You fiercely defend your state.
Every state in our country has its own stereotypes and naysayers and Kentucky is no different. But if you grew up here, you're not going to take any negativity about Kentucky and you'll defend its beauty, diversity and special place in your heart.
2. You prefer lakes over oceans.
Everyone loves a day at the beach, but if you grew up in Kentucky, you'd likely choose the lake life over the ocean any day. There's a beautiful lake everywhere you turn in our state and even if you grew up in the city or out in the country, you probably spent some time at the lake and fell in love with this timeless Kentucky vacation.
3. You know where to find good food.
Kentucky has been a big fan of the locally run restaurant before it was trendy to be one. Mom & Pop eateries are all over the state and serve great food with wonderful customer service. If you grew up here, you probably know a place down the street, and you likely know the owners as well.
4. You take the backroads.
There isn't really a need for highways in Kentucky, because if you grew up here, you probably prefer to take the backroads. As you should, because Kentucky has some of the most beautiful driving scenery in the country and who wouldn't want to relax while peacefully driving past horse farms and climbing mountains?
5. You buy Kentucky-shaped stuff.
Your love for Kentucky runs so deep that if you see something that has Kentucky on it or is in the shape of Kentucky, you have to have it. These days, you can find everything from t-shirts to serving dishes, all in the signature Kentucky outline.
6. You've never ridden a horse, but you know a lot about them anyway.
Everyone associates Kentucky with horses and if you grew up here, you probably picked up a thing or two about these beautiful creatures. Maybe you've ridden them (but probably not), but you can hold your own when the out-of-towner asks you a question or two because you're from Kentucky - you should be a horse expert.
7. You live for a good fair.
Whether it was your local county fair or the State Fair in August, you probably have fond memories of riding rides and eating funnel cakes at these festive gatherings in the summer. This Kentucky nostalgia sticks with you long after childhood.
8. You prefer the simple life.
You keep up with the fast pace of today's world, but in your heart you are perched on a swing or rocking on a front porch, taking in Kentucky's simple beauty. No matter where you grew up in the Bluegrass State, you probably have a spot like this that you'd love to go back to.
9. You see Kentucky everywhere you look.
Even if you stray from where you grew up, you see Kentucky everywhere - sometimes, even in the clouds. It sticks with you that way.
