Breaks Interstate Park is a bistate park that’s located in both Kentucky and Virginia. One of several interstate parks in the United States, it’s only one of two that’s operated jointly under a compact between two states (Virginia and Kentucky), rather than two separate state park units. In many ways, Breaks Interstate Park defies definition; and as such, kind of slips under the radar. But it shouldn’t, as this underrated and unforgettable park in Kentucky is one of the state’s most beautiful hidden treasures, featuring tranquil waters, stunning canyons, and even a secluded lagoon.
Breaks Interstate Park is tucked away in the eastern corner of Kentucky, right along the Kentucky/Virginia state line.
The park is glorious; marked with an abundance of nature, bountiful, rolling hills, and stunning canyons. The centerpiece of "The Breaks" is a five-mile, 1,650-foot-deep gorge is commonly referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the South.”
The park has a history as big and deep as its canyons, too; Daniel Boone crossed through the "break" in the gorge back in 1767 on his way to Kentucky, and locals have loved the area ever since -- especially during the summer.
This area is so much more than just a scenic swimming hole, however; it’s also the access point for one of the prettiest stretches of paddling in Kentucky.
If you get there early, The Breaks is also an excellent spot to fish for smallmouth bass and trout. The park also has picnic tables and bathroom facilities, so pack a lunch and make a day out of swimming and exploring this beautiful hidden oasis.
There's a $2 day-use fee per car for admittance; $10 per bus (15-passenger or more). Season gate passes may be purchased at the Park Visitor Center for $26.
