Kentucky has many beautiful bodies of water—from majestic lakes to winding rivers—which means many of our cities and towns are close to the adventure the water provides. But there are a few towns in the Bluegrass State that are nestled right along the banks of a lake, river or stream, making them the perfect spot for a charming day trip.
The picturesque town of Augusta is situated along the Ohio River, which provides a lovely backdrop for the city's numerous activities and festivals. Riverside Drive is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in the state and the history of this town will fascinate you.
Grand Rivers, known as the Village Between the Lakes, is a water-lover's paradise. With designated walking trails, marinas and nearby Land Between the Lakes, you'll never get bored in this Kentucky town. And make sure you stick around for an unforgettable sunset.
Paducah is known as a mecca for those wishing to express their creativity, but it's also perfectly located along the Ohio River. This charming town is full of artistic flair, as well as scenic waterfront views.
Located on the Kentucky/Virginia border, Elkhorn City is the gateway to a plethora of adventure in the water. It's position along the Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River makes for scenic activities and even a chance to experience exciting whitewater adventures.
In Northern Kentucky, Newport is tucked in along the Ohio River, with some of the best views of the neighboring Cincinnati skyline. The rows of historic homes, access to the river by boat or along the Purple People Bridge, and the plethora of entertainment all make Newport an exciting town along the water.
You hopefully already know that Frankfort is our capital, but you may not realize that it is also a waterfront town, located on the banks of the Kentucky River. When visiting to learn about the history of our state, be sure to check out the water-related activities, as well as one of the restaurants located on the river.
Lake Barkley in Western Kentucky provides gorgeous views from this waterfront town. Nearby Eddyville has plenty of entertainment to keep you busy, but the waterfront location of Kuttawa earns it a spot on this list.
