Back In The Day, This Quiet Kansas Town Was A Wild West Hangout
The Sunflower State was not admitted to the Union until 1861, long after many others. It’s easy to assume that there isn’t nearly as much history in Kansas as there is in the original 13 colonies. However, the area has a rich history that’s just as eventful, if not more so, than New England’s tales of the Liberty Bell and Paul Revere. Not long after Kansas became a state in 1861, the town of Dodge City was first settled. Today, it’s among the largest cities in Kansas and a popular tourist destination, but this place was once nicknamed “the wickedest town in the American West.” Learn about this Wild West town in Kansas:
After the Civil War, the cattle driving trade exploded in Kansas. Numerous towns throughout the state became boom towns thanks to the thousands of cows passing through stockyards. One such town was Dodge City.
Dodge City's growth was exponential, and plenty of less-than-savory spots began opening in the city's downtown area. Brothels, saloons, and gambling halls were common, and bullfighting was a regular occurrence.
Among the most famous of the Dodge City saloons was the Long Branch Saloon. It was a stereotypical Wild West saloon with gunfights, gambling, and even a five-piece orchestra.
The Wild West period gradually came to an end by 1890. The development of the railroad made lengthy cattle drives obsolete. There were so many small settlements dotted throughout the landscape that there was not much large frontier left.
Today in Dodge City, you can find numerous attractions related to the city's Wild West history. The wonderful Boot Hill Museum features reconstructed shops and saloons, and stages reenactments.
