Kansas loves mouthwatering homemade food filled with love, and if mama made it for you, even better. These dishes are just so “Kansas” that most of us remember how much we love (or hate) their place in our state. What have you had?
10. Cinnamon rolls beside a bowl of chili
This one's probably the most odd out of the list, but you'll just have to understand sometimes things go better together. Take my word for it, I guess.
9. Ham and bean soup
Though I don't favor this dish, it's my understanding that many a Kansan grew up with this on their tables often enough to be considered a staple.
8. Skilled fried chicken (bonus if it's cast iron!)
I mean, what's more Kansas than a fried chicken dinner? I've never seen anyone argue so much over their favorite chicken house than in Kansas, that's for sure!
7. Chicken and noodles over mashed potatoes
There's nothing that leaves that warm feeling in your stomach for longer than the soft egg noodles in this dish.
6. Chicken fried steak
This dish is literally everywhere, and it's hard to find a restaurant that doesn't serve it. Kansas wouldn't be the same if we didn't have this mouthwatering meal around.
5. KC BBQ...anything.
Pork, chicken, beef, anything you can imagine imbued with these flavors is sure to be delicious.
4. Lefse
Here's the recipe I use for this sweet and buttery holiday dish made from potatoes. You can do anything with those things!
3. Homemade bread
Whether it's "friendship bread" started in your church or workplace, or you just bake it yourself at home from scratch, there's hardly a household without one bread recipe. I use leftover zucchini in some of the breads I make!
2. Bierocks
1. Fresh-from-the-garden tomato sandwiches. (With mayo or miracle whip, of course!)
Picking the juiciest tomato out of your garden and slicing it up for a sandwich is the best feeling ever, and many Kansans have shared this feeling one time or another.
