This house was built in 1865 and belonged to James B. and Lucinda Mahaffie. The home became a stop for travelers in the 1960s and by 1867, Lucinda and her daughters would serve up to 100 meals a day to weary travelers.

In the 1800s, the Mahaffie family and the Barlow, Sanderson and Company Stagecoach Line signed a contract that the farm would be one of the stops for the stagecoach. The stagecoach carried passengers and mail between Fort Scott and Fort Leavenworth, and Independence, Missouri, and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
