Welcome to the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, a very informative station dedicated to teaching all about Kansas' native wetlands. It's located in Great Bend, but out in the open where you can really appreciate the view.
Of course, unless you've been through places like Cheyenne Bottoms, the Haskell-Baker Wetlands, Quivira NWR or the Marais des Cygnes, you might never have noticed that wetlands are a big part of Kansas wildlife and scenery.
What you also might not be aware of, is how crucial these wetlands are to our native wildlife. Wet and dry periods as well as migrating birds are all important.
Everything is bright and well illustrated, with some areas being interactive, so that every member of the family can learn and stay entertained. It may have started in 1923, but the more recent building is a stunning upgrade from the original program in place.
In any season, we love our wetlands, and encourage people to visit just to see how many birds migrate here each year. You'll see birds you've never seen before and more!
Born and raised Kansan, Clarisa has lived in both tiny towns and cities during her time here in the Sunflower State, mostly in the south central area. Clarisa is a stay-at-home mother of one crazy kid, two cats, and two geckos, and has been writing anything and everything since she's held a pencil, though Kansas and fantasy novels take up most of her time.
