Welcome to the great Caenen Castle in Shawnee, Kansas. It has been many things over the years, including a wedding venue, and more recently, a Renee Kelly's restaurant.
Built in 1907 by dairy farmer Remi Caenen, this castle is thought to be modeled after a French or Belgian castle, namely Chateau Chavaniac in France, but on a much smaller scale. As small as it is, it's still beautifully made and well-kept throughout the years.
Over 100 years old, these battlements might be small, but they've been standing the test of time with the help of hand quarried stone and a slow assembly over the course of two years. He only laid stones after farm work was done each day, but his hard work eventually paid off.
It has a full basement, twelve rooms, and 2.5 stories. The Caenen family lived here until 1925, then it became a nursing home for the "mentally disturbed", a couple different restaurants, a nightclub, and even a haunted house. It's been slightly changed over the years, removing two of the bedrooms to give it a more open feel, as well as adding central heat and air. We're not mad about that!
Recently, it's been put on the market for the price of $1,795,000. If you can imagine living in a castle, that dream is one step closer to reality, if you've got the coin.
Born and raised Kansan, Clarisa has lived in both tiny towns and cities during her time here in the Sunflower State, mostly in the south central area. Clarisa is a stay-at-home mother of one crazy kid, two cats, and two geckos, and has been writing anything and everything since she's held a pencil, though Kansas and fantasy novels take up most of her time.
