9 Perfectly Kansas Roadside Attractions That You Must See With Your Own Eyes
There’s just something so
Kansas about having odd attractions all over the place. Whether it’s something born from a cultural tradition or something that was made up on the spot, you’ll find that these roadside attractions explain how we’re so free spirited and unique. Have you seen all nine of these perfectly Kansas places?
1. World's Largest Ball of Twine - Cawker City
Though it doesn't do anything flashy, it is a giant ball of string that they add to every year to keep it slowly growing.
2. World's Largest Hand Painted Czech Egg - Wilson
Though it was once the largest Czech Egg, it has now been hand painted to reflect the local culture of Wilson, the Czech capital of Kansas.
3. World's Largest Easel (and a painting to boot!) - Goodland
Not only did a Kansan create the world's largest easel, but a giant painting including our state flower sits on it.
4. The Shoe Tree - Wetmore
An oddity for sure, this rural tree has become a place for people to hang their shoes and contribute to a growing attraction.
5. World's Largest Collection of World's Smallest Versions of World's Largest Things - Lucas
This collection of tiny versions of the largest things in the world lives in Lucas, but you can also hire it for parties as a great talking piece.
6. Bowl Plaza - Lucas
Not only is this a public restroom, but it's shaped like a toilet with a roll of toilet paper creating the sidewalk. It's also covered in art, that'll keep you looking at the walls the whole time you're here just so you can take it all in.
7. Mount Sunflower - Wallace County
Though it's definitely not a mountain in anyone's eyes, this marker is for the tallest point in Kansas. It's a testament to how Kansans can make a good thing out of anything, even a wide open area of land next to Colorado.
8. The Political Art of M.T. Liggett = Mullinville
The late M.T. Liggett set up all this political statement art in the years before his death, leaving behind a physical reminder of funny caricatures and personal opinions.
9. Truckhenge - Topeka
When asked to "Pick your trucks up off the lawn," you might not stick them in the ground like this, but one man with a little sass did just that after a fight with the city about his "junk." Since then, he's created plenty more, including a sister attraction named Boathenge.
In addition to these man-made attractions we love, why not stop by
these rock formations around Kansas that are naturally part of us?
