Today’s little slice of paradise? The historic Alcove Springs near Blue Rapids.

Located near Independence Crossing, Alcove Springs was once a popular stop for those traveling the Oregon Trail and is even thought to date back to when Native Americans settled the area. The once Indian campsite and Oregon trail rest stop is considered to be one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Geography and features a small spring, waterfall, and beautiful native trees. When you visit the area, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for several historic surprises, like carvings in the native stone by early travelers:
