The Hawkeye State is one of the most beautiful in the country! From our rolling hills to our open farmland, there’s a little bit of everything in Iowa. The variety of wildlife that live on our vast prairies is impressive, and you can see them up close and personal at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, located in Prairie City. This spot is the perfect place for a day trip, whether you’re bringing the whole family or just looking for a little escape from busy life. Check it out!

The Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge is a 5,600 acre sanctuary located at 9981 Pacific St, Prairie City, IA 50228

It is home to the Prarie Learning Center and miles of trails for visitors to explore.

The Prairie Learning Center hosts family friendly events year round, and is full of interactive exhibits to explain the lives of wild critters in rural Iowa

When you step outside, you'll begin your journey through breathtaking Iowa nature.

Unique grassland birds are always singing and chirping throughout the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge. See if you can spot a short-eared owl, upland sandpiper, or a sweet singing meadowlark.

Pheasants and deer are common along the refuge's roads and trails, making for quite the sight when you walk past.

The 5 mile Auto Tour takes you directly through Elk and Bison enclosures.

The Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge is perfect to explore all year long. You can even snowshoe through the trails for a close look at winter wildlife, including Elk. Keep an eye out for hoofprints in the snow!
