The Loess Hills make for the perfect day trip destination in any season! Visit Waubonsie State Park and you’ll enjoy some of the best views in the Midwest, along with immaculate trails and campground facilities.
Iowa's beautiful Waubonsie State Park is a hidden gem that showcases some of the most remarkable views in the state. It was founded in 1926, and Iowans have been enjoying it for generations!
On any given day, you can enjoy views of Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska from the top of the ridgeline. On a clear day, you can even see as far as Kansas! The overlook points in the park provide sweeping panoramic views of the entire valley.
Seven short trails make up the park, including a specific Overlook trail, the popular Ridge trail, and a five-mile Equestrian trail. Each trail is short enough to string together to make up almost ten miles of hiking.
The most popular trail is the Sunset Ridge Trail. It takes you from the valley floor to the top of the ridgeline and continues for just over two miles.
Soon, though, you'll be high above the Missouri River Valley! Though this isn't a particularly strenuous hike, the elevation gain might slow you down and challenge you a bit.
Waubonsie State Park is located in Hamburg, Iowa, and also offers both RV and primitive camping. The main campground offers 40 campsites, with 27 of them being electric hookup sites. There’s an Equestrian campground, too, with 32 campsites. If you visit in summer or fall, you might get to see riders on the trails!
