Walk Across A 262-Foot Suspension Bridge Over A Deep Ravine In Iowa
Iowa’s small towns are full of endless discoveries. When it comes to finding something fascinating, all you have to do is look around! The town of Columbus Junction is home to about 2,200 people, but visitors from all over stop by to cross the most interested (and stomach-dropping) swinging bridge in Iowa.
You'll find the Lover's Leap bridge in the aptly named Swinging Bridge Park. While the address is listed below, if you're directionally challenged, look around for signs in town that point you right to the parking area.
Before you dare to cross the bridge, there are a few things you should know. First off, it's almost certainly haunted.
The ravine below is said to have been where a young indigenous woman threw herself to her death as a result of unrequited love. To this day, visitors have heard wails when it's quiet and calm in the middle of the bridge, and when the original bridge collapsed with two young children in the early 1900s, they miraculously managed to avoid injury. Locals credit their good luck to the protective spirit of the ravine.
Over the years, the bridge has been restored, rebuilt, and reinforced - so, you
should be pretty safe walking across, no matter how wobbly it seems.
Today, the bridge spans 262 feet across a beautiful forest valley.
This swinging bridge in Iowa is a top fall destination because the gorgeous colors of the season are on display in the ravine.
If you're brave enough to haunt a swinging, swaying, and wobbly haunted bridge in Iowa, come on over to Columbus Junction! It's sure to be a day trip to remember.
