Iowa has more than 100 wineries according to the Iowa Wine Growers Association. Of course, they are spread out all over our great state. This particular wine trail will take you near Iowa’s eastern border. No matter where you are in Iowa, there’s probably a locally-owned winery close by and summer is the perfect time to explore a few vineyards and tasting rooms.
Before planning your trip, be sure to double check the winery’s tasting room hours. Many smaller wineries have hours that vary by season or they may close occasionally for a special event.
Our journey through Iowa's wine country (or rather, just a little bit of it) takes just 2 hours and 19 minutes.
Their new tasting room opened last summer, and it's in the old Peter Lampe House. The transformation into a tasting room is gorgeous. Enjoy the large deck while you relax with a glass of Wide River Winery's beautiful wine. A back patio is surrounded by incredible landscaping. If you happen to be there on a Saturday night, you'll get to enjoy live music.
This high quality wine starts in the good black Iowa dirt right in the vineyard. It takes between eight weeks and two years after the grape harvest for the wine to be ready for the tasting room. Relax in the quiet setting here, surrounded by the beautiful vineyard, serenity pond, and breathtaking waterfalls.
This place offers ambiance that will make you want to settle in for awhile with a delicious glass of Stone Cliff Winery's Iowa wine. You'll get to take in views of the Mississippi River and historic train bridge. Sit outside in the wine garden if the weather is nice and enjoy a view of the historic Shot Tower. If you visit during the week, plan to have lunch in the Tasting Room between 11am and 2pm.
Nothing beats a glass of Cherry Blossom or Iron Bridge Red wine in the quiet countryside that surrounds Brush Creek Winery. This Iowa winery is located next to a hunting preserve, so you may catch a glimpse of turkeys, pheasants, deer, or even Bald Eagles.
This small family owned winery produces many types of wine to suit every taste. Whether you prefer a light and sweet white or a deep, dark, and dry red, they have a wine for you. As a bonus, they also make and bottle old fashioned rootbeer and offer many types of wine jellies and jams.
