On the south side of Des Moines, in an unassuming building not far from the airport, you’ll find something that’s absolutely magical. This is the location of Smitty’s Tenderloin Shop, a business that is far more than a restaurant – in the opinion of many, including a national magazine, this is the spot that serves the very best sandwich in Iowa. The restaurant has a long history. In 1966, Bill “Smitty” Smith noticed a restaurant for sale across the street from his gas station. His tenderloin shop was born. In 1983, Greg, Bill’s son, and his wife, Cheri took over the family business and moved it six blocks, to the present location.
