Summer is the perfect time for hiking, but not everyone is up for a strenuous trek through the wood to some of Iowa’s most impressive sites. Maybe you’re recovering from an injury, or maybe you’re new to hiking and don’t want to push yourself too far. That’s where Iowa’s paved trails come into play. Hiding at an underrated state park in Ames, the Ada Hayden Heritage Park Loop is a charming and peaceful summer adventure around a beautiful lake that’s accessible to hikers of all abilities.

At Ada Hayden Heritage State Park, the well-maintained loop trek is no more strenuous than a walk down the street - but your street doesn't have this scenery.

The trail is well marked and filled with signs letting you explore the history and features of this quaint Ames park.

The loop trail takes you right by Ada Hayden Heritage Park Lake, giving you a great vantage point of the water - or a great fishing spot to catch some trout or bass!

The trail is marked by some interesting rock formations, put together by past visitors over the years.

As you pass by the woods, keep your eyes open. You may get to see some local wildlife up close and personal!

However, the best place to see wildlife is in the skies - the park is the home to many native and migrating bird species, including the beautiful trumpeter swans.
