If you love delicious dairy products, you’ll want to ‘moo’ve yourself on over to Kalona, Iowa. Here you’ll find the Kalona Creamery, a dairy factory that has produced outstanding cheese, butter, and more since 1946.
The creamery has a big fan base. In fact, in 2014, when it closed due to increased regulatory requirements, fans started a #savethesqueak campaign. The creamery opened back up a year later and it hasn’t looked back. Here’s what you need to know about this delectable dairy destination.
The creamery sources fresh local milk and is owned by eight local companies. It sells house-made cheese, butter, and ice cream and has a shop and deli filled with local Iowa foods.
The creamery caters to people who prefer fresh, minimally processed milk. It uses a special process that helps preserve nutrients. It also tastes great!
The creamery produces a variety of specialty cheeses including white cheddar, bacon ranch, and mild white cheddar jalapeno. The creamery makes the cheese in large vats that are located on-site.
Kalona's cheese curds are fresh and delicious. A salting process creates a proper cheese curd "squeak" with every bite. Two flavors are available - white cheddar and bacon ranch cheddar.
If you have a sweet tooth you'll want to try Kalona's ice cream. It produces eight flavors including "Chicken Feed," vanilla flavored with homemade monster cookies and extra M&M candy.
The creamery is located about 15 miles southwest of Iowa City. It’s open Wednesday-Saturday and it also offers tours, by appointment only. If you love made-in-Iowa farm-fresh foods, you should check out this farm with the world’s freshest jam.
