Hot Air Balloons Will Be Soaring At Iowa’s 32nd Annual National Balloon Classic
Things are looking up in Indianola this year. Up, up and away, that is. After a brief pandemic-related pause, the National Balloon Classic is back and it promises to be better than ever. Trust us, we’re not full of hot air on this – the National Balloon Classic is simply amazing and something you have to see for yourself. Make plans to put the classic on your calendar. Here’s what you need to know and what you’ll see in Indianola this year.
Indianola is ground-zero for hot air ballooning. The city is about 10 miles south of Des Moines and it's home to the National Balloon Museum and U.S. Ballooning Hall of Fame.
The National Balloon Classic has been taking place since 1989. The 9-day event is held at Memorial Balloon Field and it draws nearly 100 hot air balloons.
Every year the event is a party - it features live music nightly, food and beverage vendors, activities for kids, fireworks and skydiver performances.
The balloons are spectacular, especially at night. The balloons don't fly during the heat of the day. They take to the air in a morning session and in an evening session. Morning flights launch at 6:30 a.m. and evening flights launch at 6:30 p.m., weather permitting.
The balloons are at center stage and pilots from all over the country bring their balloons to the event. They compete in "races" that involve flying accuracy.
