When it comes to wealth, Iowa has plenty to be thankful for. We have four beautiful and distinct seasons, a great Midwestern work ethic, and a fairly peaceful place to call home.
Where cash is concerned, we exist in the mid-range of states in the U.S. Iowa is the 25th richest state in the nation with a median household income of $54,736. Our per capita income (total income for the state’s population divided by number of residents) is $28,361.
It’s not surprising that Iowa residents living near Des Moines have a higher income. According to a report by U.S. News, the Des Moines metropolitan area is actually the richest in the nation with the highest median income relative to the low cost of living.
The small cities around Des Moines as well as the capital city itself are the fastest growing in the country, too.

More people moved to the Des Moines metro area last year than to the ultra-cool Austin, Texas.

The high income in the area is due to the strong job market, of course. Publishing businesses, financial services, and the insurance industry employ a great deal of the communities surrounding Des Moines.
This little Iowa town is part of the Iowa Great Lakes region in northwestern Iowa. It’s located on the west side of West Lake Okoboji.
