Iowa is full of beautiful, historic buildings, hotels, restaurants, houses and mansions. You might be surprised by how many of them have haunted pasts and reputations for the supernatural. Dodge House, in Council Bluffs, is just such a place. There have been reports of all kinds of unexplained activity that would chill you to the bone. So take a trip through this haunted mansion…if you dare.
Dodge House is a stately mansion that was built in 1869 by General Grenville Dodge, for the price of $35,000, which was quite a bit of money in those days. He was a wealthy civil war veteran who has been called "the greatest railroad builder of all time."
The beautiful three-story, Victorian-era mansion overlooks the Missouri River Valley, and in 1961, it was designated a National Historic Monument. The house is thought to be haunted by a few ghosts, including General Dodge himself.

Over the years, many visitors to the house have reported seeing apparitions there. Although he didn’t die in the house, the ghost is thought to be that of General Dodge. His apparition has been spotted many times there, in the form of a ghostly shadow walking the mansion’s hallways.
Visitors have reported hearing two men arguing in empty rooms, strange noises and seeing the ghost of a young girl. Who the two men and the young girl are remain a mystery.
Visitors aren’t allowed to take photos inside the house, making it difficult to document paranormal activities. But a supernatural experience like seeing or hearing a ghost isn’t something that one would soon forget.
In addition to apparitions and unexplained noises, people have also reported seeing bright orbs at night, both inside the house and outside on the grounds.
The house is now a museum, and it’s open for tours. Their regular hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm. The last tour begins at 4pm. Address: 605 S 3rd St., Council Bluffs, IA.
