Dubuque's historic Fenelon Place Elevator is a quirky attraction that appeals to people who want to ride the world's steepest and shortest railway!

The Elevator was built in 1882, after an influential Iowan got sick of his long buggy ride back to his house on the top of the bluffs at Fenelon Place. Because of how long his rides took, he never had time to nap at home during his lunch break, and that just wouldn't do!

Inspired by incline railways he had seen in the Alps, J. K. Graves petitioned the city for the right to build one here, and pretty soon, the Fenelon Place Elevator was born.
Today, the drive from downtown to the top of the bluffs isn't quite as lengthy, but visitors still love to ride the railway - also known as the 4th Street Elevator - to the top.

The funky little railcar is slanted, too, so that riding along is easier on passengers. When you climb in and sit down, you'll pull a bell cord and your ride will begin.
