This Iowa Town Is Hiding A Medieval Secret That Makes It The Most Unique In The Midwest
What is it with Iowans and unique architecture? Not only do we have a town
full of lighthouses, but we have a town full of castles, too. Only about 2,000 people call Ida Grove home, but thousands more visit each year to see the Medieval secret scattered about town.
You might get the idea that Ida Grove is a unique little town when you first drive in - and you see the observation tower and visitor's center that greets you.
This is the first of the Castles of Ida Grove that anyone sees coming into town!
Midwest Industries founder Byron Godbersen is the man behind the Castles of Ida Grove. He first built one on his own estate, which was complete with a man-made lake and a replica of the HMS Bounty.
Godberson was so happy with his castle that he made it a mission to transform the town. The first public project was a stone tower and bridge over Odebolt Creek, near the town's golf course.
From there, the idea grew and grew. Medical buildings and offices moved to castles, and the Ida County Courier building became a favorite place for visitors to see.
Skate Palace is probably America's most interesting skating rink. Don't worry, though, there's no moat or draw bridge separating you from hours of old-fashioned fun.
Midwest Industries has a private jet and replica vintage airplane stored in a castle themed hangar! It's private property, but you can view it from the road.
Who would have thought one man's idea could change the face of an entire town? Plan a trip to Ida Grove to see the most interesting town in Iowa. Don't forget your chainmail!
