There’s no doubt that Indiana has lots of fantastic places to visit. But in my opinion, the small towns are the true heart and soul of the state. They are brimming with historical significance, natural beauty, walkable downtowns with adorable boutiques, as well as incredible restaurants. Moreover, these charming towns have the best festivals and local events. That’s especially true for Whiting, a small lakeside town in Indiana with tons of fun things to do. And it’s the perfect destination for a weekend getaway.
Tucked along the southern shores of Lake Michigan just 20 minutes outside of Chicago is the small town of Whiting Indiana.
Since Whiting is a waterfront community, we recommend visiting during the warmer months to take full advantage of the lakeside recreation.

As the crown jewel of Whiting, you’ll love strolling along the Whiting Lakefront Park. It boasts a pier, walking/biking trails, pavilions, a boat launch, as well as incredible views of the stunning Chicago skyline.
The park is also a hub for various water events throughout the year, and it’s home to Whihala Beach featuring a floating waterpark. The beach is an oasis for warm weather fun.

One of the best parts about Whiting is the charming walkable downtown. It’s brimming with historical buildings, great specialty boutiques as well as delicious restaurants.
Featuring a blend of tropical flavors, the Winey Beach Cafe will be a great spot to indulge in fresh seafood selections as well as some island-style cocktails.
If you’re visiting during late July, you’ll want to attend the Pierogi Fest. Hundreds of thousands of people flock to this unique festival every year. It’s unlike anything that you’ve ever seen.
