If you love Lake Michigan, you’ll definitely love this trail. Scroll on to learn all about it.
The Indiana Dunes National Park is the only national park in Indiana. Once a state park, it now joins the ranks of Yellowstone and other federally protected patches of land.
The longest trail here is Trail 10, which is an extensive sand dune hike better suited for more adventurous hikers.
Spanning 5.5 miles, the trail passes not only through sand dunes but a graveyard of dead trees, white pines, and finally, the beaches of Lake Michigan.
Traversing the dunes is much harder than hiking on flat dirt or paved paths. At times it feels like you take a step backward for every two steps forward, especially when hiking uphill.
The views along the way are absolutely stunning. The diverse range of ecosystems at the Indiana Dunes National Park is part of the reason why it is protected.
Just when you've had enough hiking in the sand and trees, this sand dune hike will open up to the beach at Lake Michigan where you can take a stroll in the water or swim in the waves.
The views here are worth the long hike. It's truly an amazing experience to hike over these mountains of sand to one of the greatest lakes in the world.
