Prairie Edge Nature Park Is An Underrated Slice Of Paradise In Indiana
When it comes to the great outdoors, there are lots of great places you’d definitely want to add to your “to see” list. There are a bunch in Indiana that are mentioned frequently; our beautiful state (and national) parks are truly splendid, and the camping here is excellent. There are hundreds of miles of trails and paths to wander on for an entire afternoon (or longer), and dozens of sparkling lakes, creeks, and rivers to enjoy. But, sometimes, we crave quiet. Those places are beautiful, but they can get so crowded. We want to go somewhere a little quieter than the more bustling natural attractions, which is where a lot of our nature parks in Indiana come into play.
It's never terribly busy here, which is lovely. Folks often talk about how nice and quiet it is when they refer to Prairie's Edge, and we love that about it. It's perfect for a tranquil afternoon in the sun without the throngs of visitors.
The park has an accessible marina, and the short loop trail surrounding the grounds is a quick and easy way to get out into nature without wandering too far from home.
Prairie Edge is commended by many for its excellent birdwatching opportunities, and its incredible wildflowers in the spring and summer months.
Don't allow the small space to fool you: there's plenty to do other than birdwatching and flower-peeping (not that we personally couldn't just do that all day).
It's got a five-acre pond teeming with fish waiting to be caught.
There's a picnic area, a butterfly garden (visit in peak wildflower season for the ultimate butterfly experience), and all sorts of native plants and flora to admire.
It's one of Indiana's best-kept secrets; it may not be enormous or overwhelmingly popular, but perhaps it should be. Well, maybe - or maybe it should stay exactly as quiet and beautiful as it is.
